The Philly Trash Bash was a tremendous success. We all had such a great time running around Philadelphia and making spectacles of ourselves. The photographers got so many great photos and we got some great video. My First Quilt!

This Encore Bride is a firm believer in giving experiences as gifts instead of "things" however, with Mr. Encore's impending deployment I knew there will be no time for any travel plans for Christmas. Instead I remembered how Mr. E fondly recalled the memories of his grandmother hand quilting when he was growing up. I decided to make him a quilt just in case it got a little cooler at night and that green Army blanket wasn't enough to keep him warm. It took me about 40 hours to finish (8 alone to cut the fabric!)

The blocks are finished and the border is set.

Here is a picture of it completed, please excuse the poor lighting on these pictures.

The back of the quilt, you can't see it but there is a custom silk label on the corner with his name, a scripture and my name.

This is what he found when he opened his last present on Christmas, I had a blue ribbon and bow around it inside of the box.

I never dreamed that he would be so touched by the quilt! Due to his deployment I could only give him things he could use and take with him; an iTunes giftcard, movies, hi-tech watch, calendar, custom letterpress stationery with his rank and name, a control remote Army tank (just for kicks) and the quilt.

He knew I'd been working very hard on this quilt and I had to tell him a "white" lie so he wouldn't know it was for him, when he opened the box and saw the quilt he was in shock. He took the quilt with us to his family (we did Christmas at home before we left for his family) and made sure to tell everyone about it.

The quilt is not perfect, it was my first and although I've been sewing a very long time I never made one before. Due to the prints I chose I realized after I started that it would take a while to cut as all the prints needed to be matched (the guitars, diagonal lines, linear prints, etc.) In the end I'm so glad it turned out well and all of my efforts paid off, it was a hit and is currently somewhere in the Middle East keeping my honey warm as I write this.

In the process I learned to never underestimate the appreciation for giving someone your time as you create something for them, small or large, it is the thought and effort that counts. Did you make any handmade gifts this season? Did people react as you expected once they saw them?

The Encore Bride Fitness-30 Day Shred Challenge

I've been struggling with sticking to a workout plan. I mean, at this point, who hasn't? I've done it all (or not), I've purchased different workout videos (that still have the wrapper) and I've counted points but I can never stick to a plan and follow through. One of the blogs I follow, The Roddy Bride decided to try the 30 Day Shred and posted about it the other day (see post here) she's ready to Shred and I am too. Granted I've only had the DVD for 11 months and it still has the wrapper on it (!). Reading her post was all the motivation I needed to dust that DVD, open it and do it with her. If you are motivated go ahead and do it with us, you can follow along and let us know and we'll do a roll call every week. Here's the challenge: we will do the 30 Day Shred for ALL of 30 days. We will post every Tuesday the following:

Title: Massive BNP vote in Newcastle

YESTERDAY 29/1/09 was a great day for British Nationalism.

In Grimsby, 1000 British construction workers demonstrated in support of British jobs for British workers and in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 836 British voters returned their ballot papers marked in support of the British National Party.

At the citys local council local elections in 2008, when Fenham ward was last fought, the British National Party polled 295 votes which was just 9% of the total vote. Last night BNP candidate Ken Booth, received 836 votes, 27% of the vote, and trebled the level of BNP support in the ward.

It was another in a string of brilliant results for the British National Party in local elections, Ken Booth told the BNP website this morning.
We were the only Party whose vote share went up which shows that our message is getting home and that was in spite of the huge campaign by the trade union, Unison, which put out thousands of leaflets and sent out thousands of letters telling people not to vote BNP. Their campaign was a spectacular and expensive failure and a waste of their members money.
We can clearly win this ward next time, but the next stop for us here in Newcastle is the European Elections where with a few more results like this one we shall be on course for a North East seat in the European Parliament, he said.

The result has sent shockwaves through the political establishment, and was the main item on BBC Look North news this morning with Labour and Lib-Dem spokesmen clearly stunned by the size of the BNP vote. And this result couldnt have come at a better time, as on Sunday the BBCs Politics Show for the North East and Cumbria is charting the rise of the British National Party in the region.

In the past the Old Gang parties have blamed low turnouts for giving the BNP a high percentage of the vote, but last nights huge 40% turnout, double the norm, blows that theory firmly out of the water. The BNP result is even more noteworthy in the light of a sizeable 11% ethnic minority population in Fenham Ward.
