High Definition Video

Walk in to any store that sells televisions and you're bound to find 10 aisles of high definition televisions (HDTV) and 1 aisle of standard definition televisions (SDTV). High definition is well on it's way to be coming the video standard. With this is mind I am constantly amazed at how many wedding videographers have not embraced HD. There are some that have but they want to charge up to $1000 more for it. I'm proud to say that Kenneth Stillman Video is, to the best of my knowledge, the ONLY wedding video company in Philadelphia that offers HD without charging extra.

Why is HD important? That's the easiest question to answer. Your wedding video is a keepsake. It's your memories on video. And with televisions getting bigger and the prices getting smaller it's important that couples think about watching their wedding video in 20 or 30 years - not at next years family reunion. The picture clarity is the whole reason the TV industry switched from VHS to DVD, and now is switching to HD DVD (high-density digital versatile disc). You want to know that your wedding video is still going to look great 20 years from now on that big 80" television.

But where are the players? The HD DVD players are on the market right now. Their price is around $400 right. You might be thinking that $400 is just too much to pay for a DVD player. But for anyone who remembers the beginning of the DVD player like I do will recall that they started at around $1000 back in 1995. They can now be purchased for about $40 and come with a free bowl of soup. The point is - the technology will come down in price and before you know it you'll have a HD DVD player in your house.

And what about the burners? Toshiba introduced the first HD DVD recorder (model SD-H903A) into the market at the beginning of 2007. As of this writing they only sell them as an OEM part (original equipment manufacturer) on PCs - mainly their own brand of notebook computers. So they haven't released them as an external option for Apple computers yet. We currently encode all of our projects for HD DVD and back them up so that when the burners do come out we will be ready to start shipping high definition wedding videos to clients.

What about Blu-Ray? The Blu-Ray format, developed by Sony, has had an uphill fight from the get-go. First, Sony has a very poor history when it comes to developing formats. The biggest problem is that they make a great product and then want to keep it proprietary. By doing this other companies either have to agree to pay a licensing fee to Sony or find an alternative. Well, so far the alternatives have worked out just find and Sony finds themselves with a hefty bill for R&D with no major formats to show for it. It all started with Betamax videotapes back in the late '70s and so far the list of failed formats has gotten nothing but bigger. Here is a list of formats that have failed - Betamax, Video8, DAT, MMCD, MiniDisc, SDDS,  ATRAC, SACD, UMD, Hi-MD. There are some even lesser known formats that I didn't mention, but I think you get the idea. For this reason, among others, we have chosen to support the HD DVD format exclusively.

Bottom Line  The bottom line is that Kenneth Stillman Video is committed to making great videos at affordable prices. If we can do a 3 camera high definition video shoot for $1500 why are other videographers charging between $5000 and $7000 for it? I won't presume to know the answer to their motives. I just know that we have a great team of videographers and editors, and making your wedding memories last a lifetime is a passion that we all share.
