Sarah and Dale had one of the most fun weddings this year. As you watch the video you can see just how happy everyone was and hat reall helps a bride and groom enjoy their day.
A big thanks to Phil from Elite Entertainment. It's always nice to work with some of the people we recommend.
And we get to work with our friend Sarah Schulte again. You can see a sample of the wonderful photos she took on her blog. This weekend we are off to Stockbridge, MA to film Sarah's wedding to her lucky fiance' John.
In this installment I want to talk about your wedding cake. This is the most expensive piece of pastry you are ever going to buy in your life. Many halls have the cake built into the price of the hall so you really don't know exactly how much you are paying for it, but you can bet that you probably paying close to $1000 for it.
And while most wedding cakes are created by some of the finest bakeries in the area, they are essentially there as a tradition and a photo op. So my tip today is going to be about the placement of the cake when you cut it. It amazes me sometimes when I ask the room manager if they are bring the cake to the dance floor for the cutting. Some will look at me like I have 3 heads.
I think it's such a shame to be paying all this money for your wedding cake only to have you cut it in a secluded corner of the room where only a few guests will be able to gather around and see. I think for $1000 you should ask the manager to move that cake to the dance floor so that all your guests can gather around from all sides and get some good photos.
And if you don't care if it's moved or the manager absolutely refuses, at least ask them not to put the cake up against a mirrored wall. It makes it very difficult for us and the photographer to shoot the cake cutting without getting each other in our shots. It's alos hard for photographers because the mirror can reflect their flash.
We know that the hall means well, and they want to dress the room up as best they can so that your guests are completely in awe of the reception facility. But sometimes they just don't think about how it will all look on video or in pictures. Like this example (again, not from one of our videos):
It's not the fact that the center pieces are there, but they should be removed temporarily for the toasts so that we can get a clear shot of the couple and the toaster. Who wants a shot of the toast with a bunch of flowers on the bride's face?
We have worked at The Merion many times in the last couple years and Scott is one of the best room managers I have ever worked with. The last time we worked there he moved the centerpieces without me even having to ask. What a great guy! I hope he does this for all videographers when the centerpieces are possibly blocking the shot. I love working at reception halls that appreciate that we have a job to do.
At another recent wedding the hall had the cake right in front of the sweetheart table. This looked rather odd so they accommodated us and moved it to the side.
Unfortunately at one reception hall they had some big candelabras that were completely blocking our shots. I asked one room manager if they could be moved before the toast and she said that I could move them. After the toasts another lady yelled at me for moving them. It is such a shame when a reception hall cares more about how their hall looks than they do about the couple's wedding video or photos. Needless to say I will not be accepting any more weddings at that hall. If they want to ruin the wedding video they can, but it won't be ours.

Sugar based, body paint
Candle wax to stimulate
Ceiling mirrors, no clothes
A bubble bath for both of us to wash away
