Picture Perfect - Gum

A couple of years ago i edited a video and there was a shot of one of the guests chewing gum. This looks really horrible on film, but it was a relative and she was chewing gum the whole time. So I made an editing decision that it's more important to include the guest than to exclude them because of the cow-like behavior. I chose poorly.

The bride request that I remove the relative from the video. For us to do a re-edit of a video is very time consuming and costly, and I felt it was really an unfair request. We have no control over what guest do or don't do. But I like to please my clients so I made the change at no charge. But I'll never make that mistake again. From that point on I vowed to never include gum-chewing guests in our videos.

Unfortunately this gum "epidemic" has become a much bigger problem than just making a few editing decisions. We have had recent weddings were the best man, the groom, the bridesmaids, and yes, even the bride has been chewing gum during the ceremony. Obviously I cannot edit a bride out of her own video. A very recent wedding had both the mother and father of the groom chewing gum.

I have no control over what any of your attendants and guests do at your wedding, but you do. Take the time to explain your your family and bridal party that your wedding is being professionally videotaped and they should refrain from chewing gum during the ceremony. You can also ask the groomsmen to act as "gum police" as they are seating the guests. It's not rude to ask your guests to show a little respect for a place of worship by not chewing gum.
